Denzal Sinclaire

Denzal Sinclaire is among the finest jazz singers of his generation and one of Canada’s most popular jazz vocalists. He has graced the stages of numerous concert halls and festivals around the world, having performed with renowned artists such as Wynton Marsalis and the JALC Orchestra, Michael Feinstein, The Count Basie Orchestra, and the WDR Big Band. He is an artist who effortlessly evokes a profound emotional interaction with his audience, touching the listener with his passionate and sincere delivery and the purity of the message in every song he sings.

Peripheral Vision

Peripheral Vision is an innovative, Toronto-based jazz quartet led by guitarist Don Scott and bassist Michael Herring that seamlessly merges jazz, rock, classical and improvisational elements. With a decade of experience, their focus is on dynamic group interaction, striking a balance between tradition and innovation. Currently on tour to promote their fifth CD release, Irrational Revelation and Mutual Humiliation, they have garnered a JUNO award nomination and the Montreal Jazz Festival’s Galaxie Rising Star Award. The lineup is completed by saxophonist Trevor Hogg and drummer Nick Fraser, whose explosive performances embody the collective and democratic ethos reminiscent of 1960s jazz and garage bands.

Emilie-Claire Barlow

Emilie-Claire Barlow is a renowned Canadian jazz singer, arranger, producer and voice actress with 12 self-produced albums, two JUNO Awards and six nominations in her 24-year career. Barlow has performed at prestigious venues around the world and with symphony orchestras. With seven appearances at the Montreal Jazz Festival, her performances were attended by as many as 50,000 people. Barlow’s leadership and production skills earned her a JUNO Award nomination for Producer of the Year for her recording Clear Day, and her all-French album Seule ce soir won JUNO and Felix Awards. She has expanded her repertoire with projects like the Bocana duo with Steve Webster and a collection of James Taylor covers called the JT Project. Spark Bird, Barlow’s 13th album released in March, ia accompanied by a 2023/24 tour. The single, Fais comme l’oiseau, is now available on all platforms.

Queen Kong

Queen Kong is an unconventional klezmer band that infuses diverse musical influences into their unique style. Led by drummer Lorie Wolf, Queen Kong primarily focuses on Wolf’s original compositions, boasting band members with diverse musical backgrounds spanning Balkan punk, hip-hop brass, classical ensembles, reggae, traditional jazz and Brazilian psych-rock. This collective wealth of experience enables them to authentically interpret klezmer-rooted music and synthesize genres such as jazz, rock and funk while maintaining a klezmer essence.

The Nickel City Stompers

Experience the vibrant energy of old New Orleans with a second line procession while the Stompers play lively southern music as they parade from club to club. They will have you on your feet dancing to their upbeat tunes… whether it’s the classic St. Louis Blues or the beloved Darktown Strutter’s Ball, you’ll feel transported to the French Quarter, savouring bourbon or perhaps a Sazerac. Madeleine Ertel

Madeleine Ertel is the winner of the 2023 Jazz Sudbury Emerging Artist program. She is a trumpet artist, composer and arranger who is quickly becoming known for her honest and melodic approach to music. A graduate of the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance, she performs in various musical contexts throughout the Greater Toronto Area. In 2022, Madeleine was selected as a finalist for the Toronto Arts Foundation’s Emerging Jazz Artist Award.

Alex Bird & The Jazz Mavericks

Alex Bird & The Jazz Mavericks have come to dominate the Canadian Jazz scene with heartfelt originals and three unique albums, earning JUNO nominations and global acclaim. OKAN

OKAN is a dynamic duo that combines Afro-Cuban, jazz, folk and global rhythms with themes of immigration, resistance and love. Led by Cuban-born Grammy and Latin-Grammy nominees Elizabeth Rodriguez (violinist/vocalist) and Magdelys Savigne (percussionist/vocalist), OKAN draws inspiration from their Afro-Cuban religion, Santeria. Singing in Spanish, English and Spanglish, OKAN has collaborated with notable artists such as Bomba Estereo, Lido Pimienta and Dayme Arocena. Their 2021 JUNO Award-winning album, Espiral, topped Canada’s !Earshot charts and appeared in NPR’s top 10 Alt Latino and CBC Music’s top 20. OKAN passionately advocates for freedom of expression, queer rights and gender equality.

Crystal Shawanda

JUNO Award-winning Crystal Shawanda returns with her fiery blues album, Midnight Blues, displaying her powerful raspy voice and genuine passion for the genre. Produced by her husband, Dwayne Strobel, the album features originals like the seductive Midnight Blues, the swampy groove of Rumpshaker and the gentle Take A Little Walk With The Moon. Crystal also covers Howlin’ Wolf’s Evil and puts her spin on Celine Dion’s That’s Just The Woman In Me. Hailing from Wikwemikong First Nation, Crystal’s musical influences range fromElvis Presley to R&B-pop hits. She initially found success in country music before transitioning to blues, earning acclaim and a 2021 JUNO Award for her album Church House Blues. Crystal Shawanda’s musical journey is a testament to her versatility and undeniable talent.

Jacob Starling Trio

Led by accomplished guitarist Jacob Starling, this trio will be performing a selection of standards from the Great American Songbook as well as tunes from the Bebop canon. Starling attended Laurentian University’s Bachelor of Arts in Music program before receiving his Master of Music from the University of Toronto. He has studied with some of Canada’s best, including Geoff Young, Andrew Downing, Jim Vivian and David Occhipinti. Starling is also active in musical theater, most recently playing for YES Theatre’s production of Jersey Boys. The group also includes bassist Brian Quebec and drummer Jack Broumpton.

Louis Simão + David French

Winner of the 2017 Song of the Year at the International Portuguese Music Awards and the 2017 Canadian Folk Music Awards World Solo Artist of the Year, Sudbury-based musician Louis Simão has been composing, performing and recording as a multi-instrumentalist in a variety of genres for over 20 years, having worked with Nelly Furtado, Kiran Ahluwalia, Michael Occhipinti, Sophie Milman and more.

David French is a Toronto-based saxophonist who has worked with Morgan Childs, Reg Schwager, Don Thompson, Jim Vivian, Steve Wallace, Dave Young, and many more. He recently appeared on Lauren Falls’ 2023 Juno nominated album A Little Louder Now.

This group specializes in hot jazz music from the 30s and 40s. Zack Martel has been studying with world-renowned guitarist and pedagogue Denis Chang in the Swing-Romani music tradition for five years. He is currently active in the Montreal jazz scene.
