The 1oth anniversary of Jazz Sudbury Festiva kicks off tonight (5 SEP). Through many cool September evenings, the festival has brought the warmth of live jazz to the ears and hearts of festival goers. From humble beginnings on the grounds of Science North to the international acts now presented at the Grace Hartman Amphitheatre, the festival continues to evolve.

Friday, 7 SEP, the opening night of the Mainstage is going to be nothing short of spectacular. Sounds around the world is the theme of the night with Italian violinist, Luca Ciarla slotted to open the show. Following the improvisational sounds of the Italian quartet, jazz fans will be swept away to the Congo. Having two group members of Congolese origin, Jazzamboka incorporates funk, rock, and be-bop with the sounds of central Africa.

Alysha Brilla will take the stage next and bring spectators on an Indian- and Tanzanian-influenced adventure featuring smooth jazz vocals. Next, we travel to French Canada for the sounds of Québécois singer-songwriter Bobby Bazini. Finally, festival goers land in New York to witness the electric energy of brass funk group Lucky Chops. Between their covers and originals, these performers curate a vibrant show you won’t want to miss.

On Saturday, 8 SEP, travel to Peru with Sudbury native Patricia Cano. “I am inspired by my Peruvian background, my many travels, as well as my musical friendships and the music community in general,” says Cano of her music.

Finally, experience a brief stopover in Mexico with the talented David Cordero on Sunday afternoon at Jazz on the Beach.

If the 2018 festival is any indicator, the next ten years are sure to be a whirlwind adventure.
